What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic health condition characterized by high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Glucose comes from the food we consume and is also made by the body. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, facilitates glucose entry into cells for energy. When the body either doesn’t produce adequate insulin or fails to use it effectively, glucose accumulates in the bloodstream, leading to diabetes.
Types of Diabetes
- Type 1 Diabetes: This autoimmune condition occurs when the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It’s often diagnosed in children and young adults but can occur at any age.
- Type 2 Diabetes: The body doesn’t use insulin properly, and while the pancreas produces some insulin, it’s not enough to regulate blood glucose. Type 2 diabetes is closely linked to risk factors such as obesity, family history, and hypertension. It can develop at any age but is more common in adults.
- Gestational Diabetes: This condition occurs during pregnancy and often disappears post-delivery. However, women with gestational diabetes are at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later.
Other Types: These include monogenic diabetes caused by gene mutations, as well as those arising from pancreas removal or disorders like cystic fibrosis.
Symptoms of Diabetes
Typical indicators include:
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Excessive thirst and hunger
